Im Chelsea Hotel hat sich egoFM Sandra (virtuell) mit girl in red getroffen.
Apropos virtuell - mit der ganzen Pandemie-Situation kommt girl in red aka Marie Ulven mittlerweile ganz gut klar und sie hat sich mit der Situation wie die meisten abgefunden. Am Anfang war es für sie aber doch ziemlich schwer, vor allem, weil sie viele Konzerte absagen musste und 2020 ja eigentlich ihr Jahr werden sollte. Trotzdem - auch wenn ihr Debüt if i could make it go quiet noch nicht auf Konzerten hohe Wellen schlagen konnte, tut es das jetzt umso mehr online - auf TikTok, in der Presse, bei ihren Fans - und natürlich bei uns als Lieblingstonträger der Woche.

"Do you listen to girl in red?"
Mittlerweile hat sich diese Frage ein bisschen verselbständigt. In der Queer-Community geht's dabei nicht um den Musikgeschmack – sondern ist viel mehr Code-Wort um herauszufinden, ob jemand auf Frauen steht.
"I think it’s really cool to have been able to have such an impact on pop culture. So I think it’s just a really cool thing and — you know — it’s really funny, actually." - girl in red
Gerade durch ihre Musik hat sie es vor allem für junge Menschen geschafft, eine Art Safe Space zu schaffen. Sie freut sich auch, dass sie dadurch für viele eine Art Vorbild geworden ist – etwas, dass sie selbst so in jungen Jahren nicht hatte. Auf Twitter fragte sie zum Beispiel mal in einem Post, wann Lehrer*innen endlich damit anfangen würden in der Schule im Sexualkundeunterricht nicht nur über hetero sondern auch über queeren Sex aufzuklären.
"I just feel like there is something dysfunctional about the school system, because a lot of people fall behind and a lot of people don’t get their individual education or like individual help that they need. […] We would literally just learn about how babies were made and that this what sex is and this is the only thing. Sex is only like a penis penetrates a vagina, that was all that we were taught." - girl in red
Auch wenn sie nicht mehr in der Schule ist, glaubt girl in red, dass es auch heute nicht groß anders sieht – hofft aber, dass sich das in naher Zukunft endlich ändert.

Ihr Debüt hat girl in red zum Großteil alleine aufgenommen und produziert – in Bergen und bei sich zuhause. Von der ersten Song-Idee bis zum finalen Album vergingen dabei fast anderthalb Jahre.
"The development [of the new sound] was just like me working really hard and just making music and just coming up with new ideas. And the ideas all just came from me really. I don’t feel like I heard something there I was like 'Oh, I want to make this!' or anything. They all just kind of you know appeared while I was messing around with sounds which is always what I like doing really. And I do consider myself a producer, so I feel like, you know, as a producer that’s just kind of what you do. You mess around with stuff, and then you find a vibe, and then you just go further along with that vibe really." - girl in red
Neue Songs, neuer Sound
Mit den neuen Songs und dem Album hat sich girl in red nicht nur musikalisch, sondern auch als Mensch weiterentwickelt. Für ihren Song "serotonin" arbeitete sie zusammen mit Billie Eilishs Bruder und Produzent Finneas. Den Refrain und den Rap-Teil hatte sie bereits fertig geschrieben…
"We sent the song to Finneas, and he really liked it, he DMed me like 'yo, this rap is so cool, it's the coolest shit I've heard in a while' and then we had a few Zoom calls, I sent the song to him, and he sent it back. [...] And now it is out in the world, and it sounds really dope." - girl in red
In "serotonin" widmet sie sich ehrlich und direkt dem Thema Mental Health und spricht dabei auch aus eigenen Erfahrungen. Durch ihre Diagnose hat sie nun viel mehr Verständnis für ihre eigene psychische Gesundheit entwickelt hat und dadurch auch keine Angst mehr, in ihrem Song darüber zu sprechen.

Sich so intensiv mit der eigenen Gefühlswelt auseinander zusetzen - und das am laufenden Band - ist natürlich alles andere als einfach. Im Studio hat girl in red Monate lang ihr Herz und ihre Seele ausgeschüttet, um das neue Album zu schreiben und fühlte sich nach der Fertigstellung – verständlicherweise - auch einfach leer. Mittlerweile hat sie sich vom Studioleben eine Auszeit genommen und genießt das auch. Trotzdem...
"I’m still sort of restoring from this time of making music. And I’m still kind of finding things — new things — to say, new things I want to say and write about. Because you can’t really just hit a button and expect like really good stuff to come out all the time." - girl in red
