Am 29. April erscheint das siebte Studioalbum Mahal von Chaz Bundicks alias Toro Y Moi. Mit seiner Musik hat er das Chillwave-Genre und eine ganze Ära an DIY- und Soundcloud-Musiker*innen geprägt.

Toro Y Moi hat bereits vor fast sechs Jahren angefangen, an Mahal zu arbeiten.

Nicht durchgehend - in der Zwischenzeit hat er auch zwei andere Alben veröffentlicht - aber alles in allem hat er an dem neuesten Album definitiv länger gearbeitet als an den vorherigen, erzählt er im Interview. Zum Teil ist Mahal natürlich aber auch während der Pandemie entstanden:

"When it came to writing lyrics to Mahal, I wanted it to make it relevant to the times without really talking too much about pandemic. So I just felt like talking about our experiences and the things that we were noticing, the differences that we were noticing, like the mail and being home when the mailman actually comes by your house. [...] The mailman was the highlight of my day." - Toro Y Moi

Deswegen hat Toro Y Moi ihm auch einen Song gewidmet:

Der Titel des Albums, Mahal, ist übrigens ein Adjektiv aus dem Philippinischen und bedeutet "lieb, sehr geschätzt", aber auch "teuer".

"I wasn't making [the album] because I though it was gonna pop off on TikTok or something. These are like songs that are obviously reminiscent of the 70s and they're a little bit more subdued and lower energy than the typical hit. So it's a project of passion in that sense but than I also I wanted it to be luxury, like I wanted the Jeep to represent high taste and I wanted it to help bring that aesthetic to a higher art form sort of environment. So there's that spin to it as well." - Toro Y Moi
