Daddy's Home

Der Sound des Albums grenzt sich stark ab von dem, was St. Vincent davor veröffentlicht hat. Der Kompositionsprozess habe sich immer wieder verselbstständigt. Am Ende wurde etwas ganz anderes daraus als ursprünglich geplant.

Der Klang hat sich irgendwann zu "Zechen und draußen sein" in Downtown New York entwickelt.

"Pre Punk, Pre Disco, Post Flower Child."

Das Album selbst wurde lediglich offline über Plakate angekündigt. Das passt auch zur Gesamtästhetik von Daddy's Home, welches sich stark auf das New York der 70er-Jahre und die Chelsea Hotel-Ära bezieht.

"In that era of culture we've kind of been through the flower child idealism, and we were getting smacked in the face with some really harsher or gritty truths. The economy was bad, things were rough. And we sort of watched all of these like power structures crumble and we were kind of sifting through the wreckage. It was this really interesting time, that I feel was similar to the time we are in now." - St. Vincent

Auch Künstler*innen mit Verbindungen zum Chelsea Hotel waren Inspirationen für St. Vincent. Darunter Stevie Wonder, Talking Book, Inner Visions und Candy Darling. Das spiegelt auch der Sound des Albums.

Zwei Daddies

Der Albumtitel greift die Freilassung ihres Vaters aus dem Gefängnis auf. Im Album Strange Mercy von 2011 behandelt sie bereits den Gefängnisaufenthalt. Annie Clarke beschreibt die Geschichte sei relativ universell. In den USA werden viele Menschen ins Gefängnis gesteckt und unverhältnismäßig viele davon sind nicht weiße Männer. Daddy's Home beschreibt aber auch sie selbst. Sie ist Daddy, sie hat Verantwortung und auch mehr als noch vor zehn Jahren. 

"The record I did in 2011 Strange Mercy very much deals with my father’s incarceration and all the sadness, anger, the ambivalence, the uncertainty. […] Now 10 years have gone on, and in some ways it’s a kind of best-case scenario. I have a good relationship with my Dad, he’s very smart, very funny, a real character. But, yea, Daddy’s Home, but also I am Daddy now. 10 years have gone by, you know, I’ve got shit to do, I’ve got responsibilities now, so the tables have kind of turned, so I wanted to play with that duality there." - St. Vincent

Seit dem letzten Album hat sich St. Vincent emotional weiterentwickelt. Es gehe ihr nicht darum die Geschichten, die sie erzählt, zu moralisieren oder zu bewerten.

"Just simply telling stories of flawed people that are doing the best they can to get by. And sometimes those decisions is in their best interest and sometimes they're not." - St. Vincent

Mehr Frauen, die Musik machen

Durch den Songwriting-Unterricht den Annie Clarke gibt, hat sie Einblick in die Entwicklung junger Musiker*innen und beobachtet einen ansteigenden Anteil an Frauen.

"In the past number of years since I have been making records it seems like the amount of women playing guitar has really skyrocketed, which is so cool. I don’t claim to have any part in that, but I am very glad to see it happening." - St. Vincent

 
Auch in ihrer Jugend gab es Frauen, die Musik machten - wie Kate Bush, Bikini Kill, Erykah Badu, Björk - "All that Riot Girl Stuff!"

"They made it easier for me, and hopefully I will make it easier for the next generation and so on and so forth." - St. Vincent
